FAMILY UNIT
In June 2000, the Domestic Relations Court established a new division, the Family Unit, designed to provide programs for supervised visitation and home investigations, as necessary.
The goal of the supervised visitation program is to help increase the amount of time that certain non-residential parents may spend with their children in safe and neutral sites, thus strengthening family relationships and encouraging these parents to meet their child support obligations.
The home investigation program serves to ensure that a parent’s dwelling is safe, and that the household is an appropriate site for the child(ren) to live or spend time in.
Referral to these programs is by court order. The Family Unit director and specialist work with the parents to implement the order, and then submits a written report to the court. The court may then use that information to establish additional orders that are in the best interest of the child(ren) and that meet the needs and concerns of both parents.
